OLYMPIC TRIALS AN UP-&-DOWN WEEK: QUALIFYING PROCESS CONFUSING

After hoping to get an Olympic berth in 3 events, the results and selection process eliminated Kimiko's chances of going in all 3.  After Thursday night, Kimiko and Laura Wilkinson finished 2nd in the 10 Meter synchronized event.  After a disappointing performance the two divers had to refocus on their other events.  Due to rule changes this year, the qualifying procedures were different and bit confusing.  FINA is only allowing each country to bring 3 athletes per event per gender.  Because US Diving decided to qualify the synchronized team first, this took up 2 of the spots automatically leaving only 1 remaining athlete to qualify.  Laura won 10M thus qualifying individually.  The top placing synchro person out the two which had already qualified gets to dive individually at the Games no matter placement in the trials.  Because the US didn't need to qualify a 3 meter synchro team, they took the top 2 athletes.
